What I wound up doing was shifting both front and rear in the same direction, with 3 shifts in the rear, then quickly adding one or two more if needed.<br /><br />Second, this kind of shifting (by ratio instead of "the next gear on the rear") is just too much of a hassle to do in traffic or hills: It felt like I was shifting all the time!
